How much does a ton of gravel cover? (at 2, 3 and 4 inches, by stone)
A US ton of 3/4 in crushed stone is about 0.79 cubic yards (21 cubic feet) at 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, so it covers about 128 square feet at 2 inches deep, 85 at 3 inches and 64 at 4 inches. Heavier stone goes less far: a ton of pea gravel covers 80 square feet at 3 inches and a ton of crusher run 75. What a ton covers, by stone
One US ton (2,000 lb) of each stone at the calculator's bulk density, spread loose and level at the depth in the column. Crusher run covers the least because it is the densest (1.7 t/m³), and a base loses more once the plate compactor has been over it: the calculator adds 15% to a compacted base against 5% for loose stone, so order a driveway base from the next table, not this one.

The densities sit inside the ranges suppliers publish (crushed stone 1.5 t/m³, about 1.26 tons per yard); wet stone weighs 10 to 15% more and covers less, so the ticket weight from the scale is what you paid for, not what you spread. The weight of a yard guide has the ranges by material.

What a ton costs delivered

Halve the depth and the area doubles, which is why two suppliers' leaflets give different figures for "a ton": they assume different depths and a different stone. Pea gravel, river rock and sand are denser, so a ton covers about 80 square feet at 3 inches; compacted crusher run about 75.
